Engineering company Steiger prepared an environmental impact assessment of the Maardu III limestone deposit area of investigation, which recommends reducing the mining area by a third but confirms that mining can be carried out if modern technology is used and environmental requirements are followed.

Steiger’s environmental expert Aadu Niidas notes that during the preparation of the EIA (KMH), two basic alternatives were analyzed – opening a limestone quarry only in the northern part of the Maardu III area of investigation and opening a quarry within the entire area of investigation with the extraction of peat as an accompanying mineral resource. The two alternatives were compared to a situation where neither is implemented, no quarries are opened, and everything remains as it is.

Vladimir Libman, chairman of Limestone Factory of Estonia OÜ management board, notes that he started looking for new raw material opportunities for the company in 2004. «We have two choices – either find new opportunities for mining in our own country or start buying material from across the border», – says Libman.
