The Latvian Association of Architects nominated the Estonian embassy building in Riga, with its Kaarma dolomite faсade from Limestone Factories of Estonia OÜ, for this year’s architecture award in the heritage renovation category.

According to the Latvian Association of Architects, the main architectural feature of the Estonian embassy building is its faсade with cornices made of massive blocks of Saaremaa Kaarma dolomite. Cornices and battens carved into three dimensions at different angles create the illusion of waves when passing by the building.

Six years ago, the Soviet-era office building on the edge of Riga’s Old Town was out of place in its surroundings and an eyesore to locals. «After the construction of what is essentially a new building, the Estonian embassy has become a prominent and perfectly fitting addition to Riga’s Old Town», said Siim Krispin, Deputy Head of Mission.
