History

Limestone Factories of Estonia OÜ is one of Estonia’s longest-established and most experienced companies in the extraction, processing, and commercialisation of natural stone.

The company, established in its current form through the merger of two historic enterprises in 2022, combines decades of industrial expertise, technological innovation, and a commitment to sustainable resource utilisation. One of its principal predecessors was Paekivitoodete Tehas, a company that has played a pivotal role in the development of Estonia’s quarrying and construction materials industry since 1959.

For decades, Paekivitoodete Tehas remained the country’s largest producer of limestone aggregates, supplying up to 30 percent of the domestic market. Following privatisation, the company embarked on a continuous programme of technological modernisation, introducing pioneering solutions such as blast-free limestone extraction using hydraulic breakers and advanced water-based processing technologies designed to minimise waste and maximise resource efficiency.

Through persistent investment in innovation, the company has brought numerous unique products and materials to market, significantly expanding the range of locally produced construction materials while simultaneously reducing the environmental footprint of its operations.

Close cooperation with universities, research institutions, and international technology partners has enabled the company to remain at the forefront of industrial development. Over the past decade, substantial investments have been made in the Väo Quarry, including the installation of a CDE limestone fines washing plant, a Fraccaroli & Balzan filter press, a Haver Hydro-Clean washing system, a high-efficiency fine fraction washing unit, a Benninghoven unbound mixtures production line, and a CAB limestone fines processing facility.

Together, these technologies form an integrated production system that enables the comprehensive utilisation of extracted mineral resources. As a result, Limestone Factories of Estonia became the first company in Estonia to implement a near-zero-waste limestone processing concept on an industrial scale.

The adoption of these advanced technologies has transformed the company from a traditional Soviet-era industrial operation into a modern European manufacturing enterprise operating according to the highest contemporary industry standards. Despite the challenges posed by successive economic downturns, the company has increased its investments in equipment and technology more than fivefold and continues to maintain its position as a technological leader within its sector.

Quality remains a cornerstone of the company’s philosophy. Significant investments have been made not only in production equipment but also in employee development and professional training. A modern in-house laboratory conducts rigorous quality control for every production batch, ensuring consistent compliance with the highest standards.

The history of Saare Dolomiit-Väokivi dates back to 1967, when the Saaremaa Dolomite Plant was established. Since 2007, the company has marketed its products under the Reval Stone brand, which has become widely recognised both in Estonia and internationally.

Drawing upon decades of experience and state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities, the company offers an extensive portfolio of natural stone products. In addition to Saaremaa dolomite and Tallinn (Reval) limestone, the product range includes carefully selected granites and marbles sourced from around the world. Production facilities are located on Saaremaa Island, while the company’s headquarters and flagship showroom are situated in Tallinn.

The company’s quarrying operations are located in Saaremaa (Kaarma and Selgase dolomite deposits, and the Gasell limestone deposit), Tallinn (Reval limestone deposit), and Märjamaa (Orgita dolomite deposit).

Owing to its excellent workability, durability, and resistance to harsh climatic conditions, Saaremaa dolomite has been used for the creation of monuments, gateposts, balustrades, cornices, portals, columns, fireplaces, and other architectural elements. Today, the material can be found in numerous prestigious buildings and public spaces in Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, St. Petersburg, Moscow, and many other European cities.

Tallinn (Reval) limestone has served as a distinguished building material for centuries and remains an integral part of the architectural heritage of both Tallinn and St. Petersburg. In recent decades, its application has expanded significantly into contemporary architecture and interior design. Floors, wall cladding, and decorative elements crafted from Reval limestone can be found throughout the Baltic States, Scandinavia, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, and numerous other international markets.

Today, Limestone Factories of Estonia OÜ combines more than six decades of industrial heritage with advanced technology, environmental responsibility, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, remaining one of the leading natural stone extraction and processing companies in the Baltic region.
