Kaarma Dolomite Wins Prestigious Architecture Award in Latvia

The Latvian Association of Architects on Monday awarded the Estonian Embassy building in Riga -featuring a façade made of Kaarma dolomite prize in the category of heritage transformation.

«I am very pleased, because thanks to the latest production technology and our excellent team, we achieved an aesthetically clean and technically precise result», said Vladimir Libman, Chairman of the Board of Limestone Factories of Estonia, the company that produced the façade.

Latvia represents the most important export market for Limestone Factories of Estonia after Sweden. «Success in Riga means a great deal to us, because more than three years ago we completely withdrew from the Russian market, which had previously dominated decorative stone sales, and shifted our focus to neighbouring EU countries», said Libman.

The embassy building, constructed on Saaremaa under the Reval Stone brand with dolomite cornices, was selected among 48 nominees in the heritage transformation category and was named the best in its category among 15 finalists.

The Latvian Association of Architects highlighted the façade of the Estonian embassy as its main architectural feature – composed of monolithic blocks of Kaarma dolomite from Saaremaa with sculpted cornices. The three-dimensional cornices and lattices, carved at various angles, create an illusion of flowing waves as one walk past the building. The competition recognised Kaarma dolomite as a symbol of Estonia, underscoring the purpose of the building.

Located on the edge of Riga’s Old Town, the former Soviet-era office building had, just six years ago, been considered visually disruptive to its urban surroundings. «After what was essentially a new construction project, the Estonian embassy has become an outstanding and beautifully fitting addition to Riga’s Old Town», noted Deputy Head of the Estonian Embassy in Riga Siim Krispin.

Commissioned by the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the embassy building was designed by a team of architects including Evgeni Leonov, Aleksandrs Borodkins, Baiba Verpe, and Ivo Dzenis. The main contractor was Aidaco Construction, which also built the Latvian National Library.

The embassy – housing the consulate, exhibition space, the ambassador’s residence, and an official apartment – is located in Riga’s Old Town at Pils iela 8/10, on the site of a former Soviet-era computing centre.

The grand prize of the Latvian Association of Architects’ 2025 competition went to a wooden kindergarten in Salaspils, designed by MADE Architects, featuring an environmentally friendly and safe design using materials approved for children’s health.

Kaarma dolomite nominated for the most prestigious architecture award of Latvia

The Latvian Association of Architects nominated the Estonian embassy building in Riga, with its Kaarma dolomite faсade from Limestone Factories of Estonia OÜ, for this year’s architecture award in the heritage renovation category.

According to the Latvian Association of Architects, the main architectural feature of the Estonian embassy building is its faсade with cornices made of massive blocks of Saaremaa Kaarma dolomite. Cornices and battens carved into three dimensions at different angles create the illusion of waves when passing by the building.

«The aesthetic purity and technical precision were based on very accurate calculations, which through the collaboration of engineers and designers», said Janno Rauk, Sales Manager of Reval Stone, the trademark of Limestone Factories of Estonia OÜ.

Six years ago, the Soviet-era office building on the edge of Riga’s Old Town was out of place in its surroundings and an eyesore to locals. «After the construction of what is essentially a new building, the Estonian embassy has become a prominent and perfectly fitting addition to Riga’s Old Town», said Siim Krispin, Deputy Head of Mission.

Irregular dolomite in outdoor areas

The use of so-called irregular limestone slabs cut with the help of modern technology is becoming prominent in Nordic garden design and is increasingly preferred to the regular concrete panels due to the varied appearance of the slabs.

The dolomite slabs produced by Reval Stone remain durable on footpaths, as the stone is cut by using wires which are gentle on the material. The crumbling limestone slabs displeasing to the eye which can be seen in the public space here and there originate from the Soviet era when blasting created microscopic cracks in the stone.

The appearance of the irregular slabs depends on the location of the quarry, as well as the characteristics of the layer used for quarrying. Reval Stone is using dolomite from Kaarma, Orgita, and Selgase to produce the slabs in the factory in Saaremaa. ‘Each slab is unique, with its own peculiar natural lines and textures, which add character and rusticity to your outdoor areas and last long,’ said Janno Rauk, sales manager of Reval Stone.

The surface of the wire-cut slabs is slightly rough, which makes them look natural and ensures a good grip, making them ideal for outdoor use. ‘Dolomites are very resistant to cold and temperature fluctuations, and the easily processable slabs are good for cutting on-site. The slabs may have some natural cracks,’ stated Rauk.

The thickness of the slabs starts from four centimetres, with each additional centimetre increasing the price by one tenth. Selgase dolomite is the most valuable, while the dolomites of Orgita and Kaarma also have great characteristics, but are somewhat cheaper.
